犯规是指场上球员在比赛进行过程中，采用不正当的方式来获取得分或者有利于得分的手段，或者是在防守时侵犯了进攻队员的有利权益。比如打手、推人、带球撞人、阻挡等比较恶性的不正当手段。正式比赛中犯规是要计算次数，当达到一定的次数(比赛分上下半场的为40分钟5次，分为4节的是48分钟6次)，该球员必须被判离场。
违例是指场上球员在比赛进行过程中，不慎侵犯了比赛中的某一些基本规定。比如走步、回场、干扰、三秒等等并不是恶意的手段。由于违例一般无意中所发生的，所以并不存在侵犯对方球员身体，所以违例不需要被计算次数而使得球员离场。
其实最重要的一点就是犯规是对球员或者比赛工作人员本身的，而违例是对规则本身的，所以走步翻腕这些规则不允许的是违例，而侵犯，打手，带球撞人以及冲撞裁判等都是犯规。
