如果有人问你：What's your pet name in your family？不要以为对方想知道你的猫和狗叫什么名字。

事实上，这是经典的“误解”表达。宠物代表宠物，宠物的名字不是宠物的名字。理解错了，但很有趣。

为什么Pet name是指人的外号，所以不能说和宠物名字一样，只能说完全没有关系。

Pet name的英文说明如下：

a special name you call some one who you like very much

你给你很喜欢的人起了特别的名字

在Urban dictionary中，pet name的解释如下：

generally used in intimate relationships in place of names . the names are usually thought of based on experience of the relationship .

通常在亲密关系中使用，而不是原来的名字，昵称的选择由特定的关系决定。

例如，babe、sweetie、honey、sweetheart、dear也不是谁想唱就能唱的。

有些人特别不喜欢昵称。希望没有人提到自己的昵称。这是因为身份可能会下降。

我没有爱称，你有吗？

Tim and Tina have started using the pet names on each other。

蒂姆和蒂娜已经开始叫双方的外号了。

与Pet name相似的表达还有pet phrase，意思是“口头禅”。

另一方面，“petty”一词本身就有比较深情的意思——宝贝，即“(表示喜欢、友好的称呼)宝贝，善良”，英语解释为“some people call the person they are talking to”

It's all right，pet，let me do it。

没关系，宝贝，我会的。

宠物用作动词时，有“触摸”。“无知”的意思是if you pet a person or animal，you touch them in an affection ate way。

例句：

the policeman reached down and petted the wolfhound .

警察伸手抚摸那只狼猎犬。

I petted and smoothed her hair。

我抚摸着她的头发。
